Co-Occurring Disorders

Mental Health and Substance Use Almost Always Show Up Together. Treating Only One of Them Does Not Work.

Des Moines Mental Health Center provides integrated outpatient counseling for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. One practice, one team, one treatment picture. Same-week appointments. Medicaid and all major insurances accepted.

What It Is

The Reason Treatment Has Not Worked Before May Be That It Only Addressed Half the Problem.

It is estimated that roughly half of people with a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental health condition. The two feed each other. Anxiety leads to drinking to manage it. Drinking makes the anxiety worse. Depression reduces the motivation to stay sober. Untreated trauma is one of the leading drivers of substance use.

Treating substance use without addressing the mental health piece, or addressing mental health while ignoring the substance use, produces incomplete results. Co-occurring treatment addresses both together.
